BAGUIO CITY -– The City Sports Development and Promotions Committee (CSDPC) is finalizing plans and programs to uplift sports consciousness in Baguio City using the PHP60-million appropriation intended to complete the rehabilitation of the Baguio Athletic Bowl at Burnham Park.
The city government wanted to use the PHP60-million budget for the construction of an indoor sports structure near the newly rehabilitated grandstand so that more indoor sports events could be held at the Baguio Athletic Bowl.
Considering this development, CSDPC member Gaudencio Gonzales on Friday, June 17 said the city government intends to submit its bid to host the 2018 Palarong Pambansa.
Gonzales said the city mayor wants to enter into a memorandum of agreement with the officials of the Province of Benguet and Municipality of La Trinidad to co-host the annual national sports competition.
In 1995, the city government submitted its bid to host the 1996 Palarong Pambansa but the city lost to General Santos City.
Gonzales said the city has sufficient venues to host the different sports events in the Palarong Pambansa which encouraged the local government to submit its bid to host the annual sports competition in 2018.
The city never hosted a national sporting event with the magnitude of the Palarong Pambansa due to the absence of sufficient sports venues that will qualify under the standards of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).
Gonzales said the mayor directed the CSDPC to conduct an inventory of the city’s sports facilities, including that of nearby La Trinidad, and accommodation areas for consideration in the preparation of the city’s bid. PNA / northboundasia.com
