DAGUPAN CITY — Four students of the Judge Jose De Venecia Memorial National High School (JJDVMNHS) here will play in the International Basketball Federation or FIBA Asia U-18 3×3 Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on July 20-24 .
This after beating Cebu in the national championship game participated in by 16 regional champion teams sometime in April held in this city.
The four students, who represented the JJDVMNHS Wildcats team, were Kristine Cayabyab, Mary Ann Cayabyab, Jenilyn Gamboa and Cristel Mae Dizon.
They won in the regional competition on April 27 at Divine Word Academy of Dagupan Gym and were crowned champions during the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) 3×3 Pambansang Tatluhan last June 9 at the Mall of Asia Arena, Pasay City.
Thus, they earned the right to represent the 3×3 Philippine National Team (girls category) in Malaysia.
Renauld N. Barrios, SBP executive director, disclosed that SBP will shoulder the allowances of the players and FIBA will take care of their hotel accommodation as well as their meals for the duration of the tournament.
The DepEd’s counterpart is to pay for the airfare of the three grade students and their coach/adviser Jethru Yao.
“This is the first time that a provincial team much more from a public school would represent the country in an international competition in basketball,” said SBP Regional Director Edilberto R. Abalos.
The Wildcats won Php50,000 as a prize in the national championship game.
