LAOAG CITY —Ilocanos here take pride of 25-year old Loren Mar Artajos for being crowned as Miss Philippines – Water, a prestigious beauty pageant for a cause.
Laoag City Mayor Chevylle Fariñas and the people of Laoag even hanged Artajos’ portrait photo, printed in huge tarpaulin, in front of the brick-walled City Hall building to express their sympathetic joy at her accomplishment.
Artajos is among the top five winning candidates who represented Laoag City in the concluded search for Miss Philippines Earth 2016 held in Manila on Saturday.
Other winners include: Miss Eco-tourism: Vienna – Melanie Mader; Miss Philippines Fire: Rosales, Pangasinan – Shannon Rebecca Bridgman; Miss Philippines Earth: Puerto Princesa City, Imelda Schweighart; and Miss Philippines Air: London, Kiaragiel Gregorio.
Enjoining everyone to become responsible citizens of the country, Artajos who hails from Barangay 18, this city, highlighted her advocacy on the importance of waste segregation as a simple and doable way to protect and preserve the environment.
“Not everyone may realize it, but many parts of our waste are actually valuable. Bottles can be used for the construction of houses, paper can be used for handicrafts and compost/biodegradable/organic matter can be used as fertilizer and to condition land. Segregation makes the selection of the materials easier and allows waste sorters to focus on recyclable materials,” she said.
As a registered nurse, Artajos also urged the public to dispose their garbage properly.
“I strongly advice that dangerous items such as electronics, batteries, paints or aerosol cans be disposed separately as they can cause harm to humans and the environment if not disposed properly,” she added. PNA/northboundasia.com
