MANILA – Malacanang on Monday welcomed the proclamation by Congress of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President-elect Leni Robredo as a major step for a peaceful transition of power on June 30 this year.
”The proclamation is a significant landmark event in Philippine democracy as it is the major step in our electoral process that leads the nation to a peaceful transition of power on June 30, 2016,” Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said in a press statement.
On Monday, the Congress, sitting as national board of canvassers, proclaimed Duterte and Robredo as the winner of the presidential and vice presidential elections last May 9 after a record three-day of canvassing of votes.
”We are celebrating the vitality of our democracy system through the clear cut expression of the popular will through the ballot,” Coloma said.
”Let this be an augury of an even more auspicious future as the country builds upon the gains achieved through good governance and the determined efforts to ensure inclusive growth for all Filipinos,” he added.
Duterte, who got over 16,601,997 votes, will be the successor of President Benigno Aquino III while Robredo will replace Vice President Jejomar Binay.
Robredo, a widow of former Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo who died in a plane crash, garnered 14,418,817 votes, only 263,473 votes ahead of his closest rival Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Robredo, accompanied by daughters Alka, Tricia and Jilian, attended her proclamation but Duterte skipped his own proclamation as the country’s next leader. Jelly Musico/PNA/northboundasia.com
